Maru Gutiérrez

Born in Valladolid, Spain, with African roots from Equatorial Guinea.

Between the ages of 10 and 12 she began her musical journey with singing and guitar lessons, and performances in choirs. Her most significant training took place at the school of modern music and jazz at the Liceo in Barcelona (piano and voice), and at the Ool Ya Koo jazz school in Granada (voice).She then added an initial training in trumpet and continued to play the guitar to accompany her voice.

She also previously coached her voice with professionals such as Verónica Ronda in ‘Teatro Corsario’ (Valladolid) with technique, method, proprioception, training, body and movement. And later with Ángela Muro in Granada. In addition, she also trained in ‘Laboratorio Teatro’ school of experimental theatre and corporal expression with Jessica Walker, where she also worked on voice, interpretation and body and movement, as well as the philosophy of acting and creation. She also did an intensive voice course and vocal improvisation workshops at WIM (what is music) in Frías, Burgos.

She has worked as a singer in several groups such as Coda Soul (soul, rock, blues) 2017 in Graná, Masdara (reggae) 2019 in Graná, Jazz Trio (jazz) 2019 in Valladolid, Lady Day (her own classical jazz musical theatre project which she co-directs and co-produces with the pianist Sara Almohalla), Proyecto Raíz de Maru Gutiérrez (world music) 2022 in Graná with her original songs and only women which culminated in her first album 2023; or Punto de Partida (traditional Cuban and Latin-Caribbean, boleros) 2023 in Bern, Switzerland; among others, and participating with the latter in major festivals held in Switzerland such as the Gugus Gurten Festival, Festival Bio Agri or the Lorrein Chilbi (quartierfest).
