Lady Day

Musical theatre/educational concert

The life and work of a woman and her time that speaks about music, gender equality, racism and fight. A journey through the legendary artist Billie Holiday.

Lady Day (2019) was the first stage piece created by the company SU artescénico, directed by Maru Gutiérrez and Sara Almohalla and also produced by Open Cultura (Granada).

Selected by the ‘Abecedaria Educational Program’ of performing arts: music, theatre and dance, that the Conserjería de Educación, Cultura y Deporte de la Junta de Andalucía carries out annually to bring culture closer to all levels of Andalusian society. For several years it has been performed in many schools, auditoriums and theatres in Spain and abroad!

Lady Day is a journey along the life of Billie Holiday, in which we go through her lights and shadows. The play shows us what it was like to be a woman, an artist and a black woman during the 1940s in the United States.

It is a critique of the gender, social and labour differences imposed by society at the time, which, depending on how you look at it, are not so far removed from the inequalities we experience today.

A play for all audiences, which navigates between music and theatre that will not leave us indifferent.

Based on the autobiographical book ‘Lady sing the blues’.
